ブル−ス ヒユーバナー
1960年米国カリフォルニア州サンタモニカに生まれる。
1０歳よりクラシックフルートを、１４歳からジャズサクソフォンを始める。
1983年カリフォルニア州立大学ノースリッジ校音楽学部卒業。
同年日本に居を移し、竹友社にてデビット・ウイラー、川瀬順輔両師の元、琴古流尺八を始める。同時期東京日本語学校（長沼）にて日本語を学ぶ。
1987年米国にもどり,カリフォルニア州立大学サンタバーバラ校東洋学修士課程入学。
1989年修士論文『大乗仏教修行としての尺八本曲』で修士号を得る。
同年文部省国費留学生として再来日、研究生を経て東京芸術大学邦楽科修士課程入学、故人間国宝山口五郎師に師事。1994年首席にて修士課程修了（修士論文：『尺八・フルートの演奏比較論』卒業演奏：『新浮舟』）
1994年から福島学院大学（現）にて助教授として奉職、翌年川瀬順輔師を迎え琴古流尺八リサイタルを開催、師範となる。
1995年、第二回尺八リサイタルを室岡松孝師を迎え開催。
1998年英語による『ビデオ尺八指南』全３巻を制作、海外の尺八学習者に好評を得る。
1999年、国際交流基金の助成を得“コンテンポラリー三曲アンサンブル”を率いてアメリカ各地の音楽祭、及び大学にて、日本音楽を紹介する。
2000年、ヒューバナーは音楽上での方向転換を決め、大学を退職し、東京にもどる。
ピアニスト・作曲家のジョナサン・カッツと共にジャズワールドミュージックのグループ
カンデラを設立、尺八の可能性の開拓を始める。
2002年リリースの初CD ”MOGAMI” は同年のステレオ誌ベスト５に選ばれ、ジャズ評論家の悠雅彦は「尺八が要のアンサンブル”現代”が響く。メンバーの自作品が気の利いた編曲と闊達なプレイではえる。尺八とジャズが出会って誕生した真のコンテンポラリーミュージック」と絶賛。カンデラは日本国内はもとより、ヨーロッパ、北アメリカを精力的にツア―．ニューヨーク ブルーノートをはじめ多くのクラブはもとより、ローマ大学、東北芸術工科大学水上能舞台等教育機関、京都コンサートホール等のクラシック専用のホールまで巾広い。2003年世界５大ジャズフェステイバルのひとつ、トロントジャズフェステイバルには、日本から唯一の参加を果たし、翌2004年、八ヶ岳ジャズフェステイバルには、カンデラ（クインテット）と、ザブトン デユオ（ピアノ＆尺八）の２通りの編成で演奏、観客を魅了した。
オリジナル曲はTV、ラジオでもよく聞かれ、特に”天戸川”は、ニューヨ―ク、メトロポリタン美術館に於ける織部焼きの展示ビデオ”Oribe"のテーマ曲となった。
2004年夏、カンデラ２枚目CD（ニューヨークで収録）”ライズ・アバブ”とザブトンデユオのDVD ”マッチ クローサー”のWリリース。
一方、教育にも熱心で、現在福島県立医科大学で尺八を教える。(2004. 7月現在）

PROFILE TO 2000
Born in Santa Monica, California in 1960.
Began classical flute studies at age 10, jazz saxophone at age 14.
Earned Bachelor of Music in 1983 in saxophone and flute at California State University, Northridge (Los Angeles.)
Relocated to Japan and began shakuhachi studies at Chikuyu-sha under David Wheeler and Kawase Junsuke in 1983. Studied Japanese at Tokyo Nihongo Gakko (The Naganuma School.)
Earned MA in Asian Studies at University of California, Santa Barbara in 1989. (Master Thesis: "The Kinko Shakuhachi Honkyoku as Mahayana Buddhist Practice." )
Began studies of Kinko shakuhachi under Yamaguchi Goro as Japanese Ministry of Education Scholar in 1989, and graduated with honors from the Traditional Japanese Music Department. (Master's recital piece:
"Shin Ukifune;" thesis: "Comparative Study of Shakuhachi and Flute.")
In 1994 became Professor of Music at Fukushima College, Fukushima Prefecture.
Performed Master Recital in Fukushima in 1995 with guest Kawase Junsuke, and in 1996 with guest Muraoka Shoko (Yamada School Sokyoku. )
In 1998 produced a three part "Kinko Shakuhachi, A Video Lesson in English," (http://www.shakuhachi.com/)and in 1999 founded the "Contemporary Sanyoku Ensemble," and produced "The Contemporary Sanyoku North America Tour 2000" supported by the Japan Foundation that performed at Stanton Music Festival, Virginia, Santa Barbara City College, California, University of Colorado, Boulder and Kent State University, Ohio.
CANDELA
In 2000 Bruce Huebner returned from Fukushima to Tokyo to found the world/jazz group "Tokyo Candela."（http://www.candelatokyo.com/） Since then, Huebner and Candela's cofounder, pianist and composer Jonathan Katz (http://www.jkatz.net/) have toured Japan extensively, as well as Europe and North America. Candela has performed at New York's Blue Note, Joe's
Public Theater, the Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival, Yatsugatake Jazz Festival, Kyoto Concert Hall, Tohoku University of Art and Design's Floating Noh Theater and the University of Rome.
Their original music has been widely heard on television and radio in Japan. Their composition "Amado River" was the theme music of the Oribe Exhibition at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2004 . Candela's first album "Mogami" was chosen "Best Five 2002" by Stereo Magazine. Music critic Masahiko Yuh wrote, "An encounter between the shakuhachi and jazz has resulted in a truly contemporary music and a rare gem of Japanese-Western fusion; in particular the all out shakuhachi improvisations leave one speechless with admiration. " Other discs released by Bruce Huebner since 2000 include the shakuhachi and piano duo "Bright Ones, Dark Ones" (Roving Spirits Records); Candela's "Rise Above" (Zabu Tone Music) and "Much Closer" (At-M DVD.)
UPCOMING
Since 2005 Bruce has performed widely with Koto performer Curtis Paterson. (http://www.utc-net.com/curtispatterson/) Their first CD of original compositions and arrangements for koto and shakuhachi will be released in 2007. They are currently planning a "Cherry Blossom Front Tour 2007" the length of Japan in sync with the natural progress of the cherry bloom.
Bruce will release a CD of original electronic shakuhachi music, "Fish in Dish," with Masahiko ITOH in 2007. The fourth part of his "Kinko Shakuhachi, A Video Lesson in English," DVD series, "Jazz Shakuhachi," will be released in December 2006. (http://www.shakuhachi.com/)
TEACHING
Besides performing, Bruce Huebner teaches shakuhachi at Fukushima Prefectural Medical University (http://www.fmu.ac.jp/index-e.html) and music history at Yamaha Music Academy, Hiyoshi（http://www.yamaha-mf.or.jp/academy/）as well as conducting private lessons.
